Project Description

For this project, students were given the Saffer family as clients. The Saffer family resides in Lynchburg, Virginia. The Saffer family consists of Mr. and Mrs. Saffer, their three children: Kally, Noah, Merritt, and their two large black labs. Kally is a freshman in college, Noah is a sophomore in high school, and Merritt is in 4th grade. With their kids growing up, the Saffers are looking for a forever home with a timeless design. The Saffers have a busy lifestyle as they are involved in sports, traveling, work, and entertaining large groups of people. The Saffers have a home which has been gutted to the studs, and the load-bearing wall cannot be altered, but doorways may be added. Below are some of the requests that the Saffers have provided for their forever home.

Mood Board and Concept Statement

Displayed above is my mood board and concept statement for the Saffer project. The goals of this assignment were to create a board that sets the tone for the aesthetic and functional decisions for my design. The mood board needed to be presented on a 24" x 18" board with the inspiration photos in a grid format. I was also instructed to write a concept statement of 2-3 sentences which would be the primary driver for future decisions of the project. This statement was to outline the problem, goals, and outcome for the project. The concept statement also needed to be succinct, descriptive, and clear.

For my mood board, I decided to include photos and inspiration pictures which showed a fresh and natural aesthetic. Many pictures of wood and earth-toned elements were included. I also tried to accomplish a refreshing and peaceful feeling from looking at the board.

The pictures above display my Mind Map, Adjacency Matrix, Bubble Diagrams, Blocking Plan, and Preliminary Plan. The goals of this assignment were to create a Mind Map which displays my train of thought through the given information about the Saffer home. Next, I developed the Adjacency Matrix which indicates mandatory, desirable, neutral, and negative relationships between spaces in the home. I was then instructed to generate three bubble diagrams where I would show possible layouts and adjacencies of spaces. From the three bubble diagrams, I was to choose one and format it into a Blocking Plan. The color schemes and labels were to be consistent through the schematic design assignments. After the Blocking Plan was developed, I needed to develop a Preliminary Floor Plan which included corridors, doors, cabinetry, appliances, room labels, and plumbing fixtures.

Refined Floor Plan

After drafting my Preliminary Floor Plan, I completed my Refined Floor Plan in AutoCAD. This floor plan needed to be formally drafted, either by hand or digitally, including labels, furniture, and pouched' walls. It was also in the assignment's instructions to display the 5' ADA turnarounds in the master bathroom and bedroom. The scale also needed to be ¼". The North Arrow was to also be included along with my logo.

For my floor plan, I decided to keep the front door in its original space. As occupants enter the Saffer residence, there is a built-in bench and locker space for storage of shoes, backpack, jackets, and other items. This opens into the open concept living room, dining, and kitchen space. There is also a hall bathroom for guests to use which is located in the public area of the home. As the Saffers are looking for a place to unwind, they can go down the corridor where the laundry, bedrooms and bathrooms are located.

3D House Model

The goals of this assignment were to understand the feeling and spacing of the floor plan. I was instructed to use either foam board or wood and construct a 3D Model of my Refined Floor Plan. The purpose of this model is to help with the understanding of the layout in regards of the natural light, sightlines, and overall flow. Furniture was not necessary, but the construction of cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms was necessary for the model.

Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment

This part of the project is where I was instructed to select interior designing elements including furniture, fixtures, and equipment which support my mood board and concept statement. For this portion of the project, I was to include, at the least, choices in flooring, cabinetry, counters, appliances, tile, wall finishes, window treatments, key furniture pieces, key accessory items, and key design elements.

For my FF&E board, I chose to follow my concept statement and mood board in keeping my choices light and natural to create a fresh and relaxing environment. I took into consideration the Saffer's concern for durability in their furniture along with the hopes for a contemporary yet homey aesthetic. I also took note of the fact that the Saffer's will be in this home for years to come, so I tried to choose timeless design elements, styles, and coloring.

The Mood Board includes my hopes for the aesthetic and feeling of the Saffer Home which is also described in my concept statement. The Final Board includes my Refined Floor Plan, Design Statement, and hand drawn renders of both the kitchen and living room. The FF&E Board includes all my choices and samples for key design elements shown in the floor plan.

Project Brief

The goal of this assignment was to introduce the idea that lighting does not only enhance the spaces we live and work in, but it also can be manipulated for our advantage when using elements and principle of design. For this project, students were assigned into groups of 3-4 students. The groups were provided with a floor plan of a home in need of lighting. Students were asked to design reflected ceiling plan for the entire home. We were to create a switching plan which also had a unique symbol for each unique type of light used. A lighting specification sheet also needed to be included which described each type of light used. The final poster of the project was to include the RCP, key images of light fixtures, the design statement, and a title block which included the group members' names, the project, class, and date. The poster also needed to connect to the team's goals for the project. This project introduced students to an overview of lighting design and project management.

My specific roles for this project included writing the design statement along with creating a "rough draft" of the reflected ceiling plan. My groups goals for the project included creating an aesthetic and inviting atmosphere. I was instructed to communicate our goals and explain our design through the design statement and convince viewers why our plan is effective for this home. I also started the design of the reflected ceiling plan as I imported the floor plan provided onto my iPad and drew up the best placements for each lighting fixture and possible locations of switches. This was done in hopes to make the process of making the plan in AutoCAD easier for my team members.
