Profile Portrait

For this assignment, I was instructed to create a set of three drawings which explore various aspects of the profile portrait. This assignment was designed to introduce students to the basic proportions of the human face. The three drawings included two human head studies, two proportion studies, and three proportion studies of the head as related to various eye levels.

Space and Perspective

This assignment introduced students to the basic concepts and skills necessary to depict spatial relations between objects in an effective manner. This assignment instructed students to create 4 separate drawings consisting of a sphere, a spherical object, 3 cubes in linear perspective, and a cubic still life drawing. The sphere was to be drawn freehand and shaded. The spherical object also needed to be free-drawn and shaded. The still life drawing is a drawing of a cube in linear perspective. A diagram was recreated in this example. Three cubes were also to be included which were various in shapes, sizes, and tones and needed to be drawn in either one or two-point linear perspective.

Perspectives

This assignment instructed students to produce drawings in one, two, and three-point perspective. The instructions required students to draw a minimum of five boxes in one-point perspective, five boxes in two-point perspective, and five boxes in three-point perspective. All boxes were required to align to a single horizon, two boxes were to be above the horizon line, two below the horizon line, and one box on the horizon line. The exterior frame of the boxes was to be darker. I also included two interior frames. One interior is drawn in one-point perspective, and the second is drawn in two-point perspective.

The photos above display geometric shapes in one, two, and multi point perspective. Two interior perspective drawings are also displayed. All drawings were produced using graphite pencils.

Still Life

The goals of this assignment were to find everyday objects based on basic geometric shapes. We were to find objects which displayed geometric shapes such as spheres, cubic, rectangular, cylindrical, and conical. Students were instructed to try and set up objects in different ways while trying to keep the light source the same throughout the exercise. It was also requested that students would use shadows and highlights to express the object's volume.

The photographs above display some of the objects I chose to use for the Still Life assignment. These objects include bowls, a water bottle, a tennis ball, and a cup.

All drawings were done using graphite pencils.

Drapery

The purpose of this assignment was to introduce the anatomy of drapery along with the study of light, value shifts, and contrast. This assignment instructed students to draw one piece of solid colored drapery. Students were instructed to make sure the drawing had both shading and tone. It was also required that students drew three unique pieces of drapery which had a variety of shapes, sizes, and tones.

The photos above show the towel as the one piece of drapery I chose to recreate along with the three unique pieces of drapery to the right.

Contour

The goals of this assignment were to enhance visual sensitivity along with hand/eye coordination. This assignment also taught students how to draw outline, contour, and cross-contour lines. Students were instructed to draw your hand holding something similar to a cloth using outline lines, contour lines, and another drawing with cross-contour lines.

All drawings were done using a graphite pencil.
